Dan D’Agostino

No name is more closely associated with high-end audio amplifiers than that of Dan D’Agostino. During his career of more than 30 years, D’Agostino pioneered countless advances in the design of amplifiers, preamplifiers, CD players, and surround-sound processors. He is known as the audio industry’s most passionate promoter of highquality, high-powered amplification. Makers of the world’s finest loudspeakers rely on D’Agostino-designed amplifiers for their most important demonstrations.

Dan D’Agostino was founder and chief engineer of Krell Industries through 2009. Now, he embarks on a completely fresh start with a new organization and new state-of-the-art designs. The products that bear his name not only achieve new levels of sound quality, they also look like nothing he has built before—more compact, more distinctive, and more living-room-friendly.

The new Dan D’Agostino products also reflect his concern for the environment—an attitude uncommon in an industry where some amplifiers consume hundreds of watts even when they’re not in use. Through innovative power-supply design, Dan D’Agostino products consume only the slightest trickle of power at idle, so they run cooler and save energy.

  • Progression Monaural Amplifier

The Progression mono amplifier is the largest and most powerful Dan D’Agostino Master Audio Systems has made to date, delivering 500 watts into 8 ohms, doubling to 1,000 watts into 4 ohms and doubling again to 2,000 watts into 2 ohms. It employs a fully complementary driver stage, beefed up with 48 output transistors, a 3,000 VA power supply transformer and 400,000 microfarads of power supply storage capacitance.

The iconic look of the Momentum amplifiers’ power meters, inspired by the elegant faces of classic Swiss watches, continues with the Progression series. The Progression mono amplifier features a new meter design with a 180-degree needle swing, driven by a high-speed ballistic circuit that enhances the meter’s responsiveness. The longer swing allows the needle to cover the amplifier’s entire output range.

The venturi heatsink design premiered in the Momentum amplifiers has been adapted to the cooling needs of the Progression mono amplifier by increasing the diameter opening of each cooling tube opening. Each heatsink is milled from a single, 48.5-pound (22-kilogram) aluminum billet.

The Momentum series amplifiers focused on combining high power output with a relatively small form factor. The Progression mono delivers extraordinary power in a larger package with the ability to drive speakers to lifelike levels. The Progression circuitry borrows greatly from the flagship Momentum to be a perfect match for virtually any speaker. The audio signal path throughout is discrete, balanced, and direct coupled. Advanced protection techniques shield the amplifier and associated components from any unexpected anomaly. Like the Momentum amplifier, the Progression circuit boards are executed with through-hole construction for the best sound quality and durability. Like all our products, the Progression series components are built by hand in our Arizona factory.

  • Progression Stereo Amplifier

The Progression Stereo Amplifier extends the Progression family with a potent stereo amplifier. Leveraging our innovative Super Rail circuitry, first unveiled in the Progression Mono, the Progression Stereo amplifier exploits this unique technology delivering remarkable control and fidelity to any connected loudspeaker.

Every amplifier employs a voltage rail, actually two, a positive one and its companion negative partner. Voltage rails support the delivery of power to the speaker. The music signal swings between these two rails but due to natural loss, the musical signal never reaches the output rails’ full capability. Our Super Rail overcomes this limitation. Borrowing the idea of a turbo in a car engine, the Super Rail employs higher voltage rails in the sections prior to the output stage. This voltage “boost” allows the musical signal to exploit the full capability of the output voltage rails. Extending the musical signal swing closer to the output rails maximizes the performance of the output circuitry design itself. The result is improved dynamics, lower distortion, and a fierce grip of the speaker.

Abundant power is required for realistic sound quality and is a cornerstone of Dan D’Agostino Master Audio Systems’ amplifier design. The Progression Stereo continues this practice. A graceful anodized Aluminum chassis houses a nearly 3,000 VA power supply transformer coupled to 400,000 microfarads of power supply storage capacitance. Paired to this foundation is a fully complementary driver stage, and output circuitry outfitted with 48 power transistors – 24 each for the left and right channels generating an imposing output. The Progression Stereo is conservatively rated at 300 Watts into 8 Ohms and delivers 600 Watts into 4 Ohms, and properly doubles its output again into 2 Ohms, with a 1,200 Watt power output. The essence of live music, dynamic contrasts, are faithfully reproduced with leading edge transients spectacularly depicted.

Inspired by the elegant faces of classic Swiss watches, the Progression Stereo is fronted by an exposed movement power meter. Featuring two 90-degree needle swing arms, a high-speed ballistic circuit enhances the meter’s responsiveness. Longer swing arms improve readability across the amplifier’s entire output range.

The venturi style heatsink design, premiered in the Momentum amplifiers, has been adapted to the cooling needs of the Progression Stereo amplifier. Starting with a 48.5-pound (22-kilogram) aluminum slab, each heatsink is milled to form the most efficient cooling element possible. Startling considering its power output, the Progression Stereo amplifier runs surprisingly cool due to its innovative heatsink design. Standard finishes include silver and black with custom painted finishes available on request.

  • Progression Preamplifier

The Progression Preamplifier adds new features previously not included in a D’Agostino preamplifier. Most noticeably, the Progression Preamplifier features an optional digital module. The digital module adds coaxial, Toslink, and USB capability to the analog base model. A fully differential DAC handles PCM signals up to 24 bit/384 KHz and DSD signals up to 4xDSD (11.2 MHz). This digital module feeds a discrete, fully complementary and balanced analog signal path from input to output. Negative feedback is not used anywhere in the Progression Preamplifier, nor is it necessary. Open-loop distortion is less than < 0.006% and the open loop bandwidth extends to over 100KHz.

Also new is the Bluetooth technology featured in the included remote control. The Bluetooth backbone extends the range of the remote by a factor of five and eliminates line of sight limitations that are inherent in IR remote controls.

The volume control is realized with a stepped balanced resistor ladder, using high-linearity solid-state relays and discrete precision resistors. The bandwidth and transient response of the preamplifier circuitry are unaffected by volume setting. The Progression Preamplifier has two independent outputs that can be individually operated or used simultaneously for driving a second amplifier in a subwoofer based system.

Housed in a separate chassis, the power supply makes use of extensive electrical and magnetic shielding to keep radiated interference away from critical preamplifier circuits. Internal circuitry filters RF noise on the AC power, and compensates for asymmetric power waveforms and DC on the mains. A second DC output is included to power future Progression source components.

Two analog meters, inspired by Swiss watch faces, function as VU meters during music playback. When volume is adjusted, the meter needles change to volume setting indicators. After adjustments are made, the meters revert back to VU meter operation. The meters also function as balance indicators when adjusting balance.
